Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres Elizabeth Newman said: “I am beyond excited to welcome Jonathan Church back home, alongside his brilliant team, to create a Crucible production of Singin’ in the Rain this Christmas. It is one of the greatest musicals of all time, and with a world-class creative team joining a brilliant company of extraordinarily talented performers, I have no doubt this ensemble will wow our Sheffield audiences this festive period. I truly believe there is nothing better than dancing in the rain and I cannot wait for audiences to experience Jonathan’s extraordinary creative vision.”
Set in 1920s Hollywood, Singin’ in the Rain follows movie stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont as the arrival of “talkies” threatens to upend their careers. When an aspiring actress is brought in to help save the day, their lives take an unexpected turn. The production will feature high-energy choreography and set designs incorporating more than 14,000 litres of water on stage.
The production is directed by Jonathan Church, with choreography by Andrew Wright and additional choreography by Jayne Elster. The creative team also includes Simon Higlett (set and costume design), Tim Mitchell (lighting design), Gareth Owen (sound design), Ian Galloway (video design), Robert Scott (musical supervision) and Larry Blank (orchestrations).
The full creative team includes Brendan Cull (associate director), Kelly Ewins (associate choreographer), Karen Large (associate costume designer), Malcolm Ranson (original fight direction) and Olivia Laydon for Jill Green Casting (casting director).
Featuring music by Nacio Herb Brown and lyrics by Arthur Freed, Singin’ in the Rain includes “Good Morning,” “Make ’em Laugh” and the title song. The production is based on the classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film, with original movie choreography by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen.
The Crucible engagement will run from November 26, 2026, through January 16, 2027, before the production continues its UK and Ireland tour through September 2027.
