Residents of South East Northumberland and the wider North East are invited to take part in a moving new community dance project, Sea of Red Dancers, presented by Eliot Smith Dance. This special piece is an adaptation of Eliot Smith’s contemporary work POPPY, which explores themes of war, conflict, and remembrance.
The world premiere of POPPY will take place at Alnwick Playhouse on Remembrance Sunday, 9 November 2025, at 5:30pm. Alongside this professional performance, Sea of Red Dancers will unite local adults in a 15-minute community dance, created to honour those who have served—or are currently serving—in the armed forces, as well as their families and communities. The work draws inspiration from the symbolism of the poppy and the poetry of John McCrae.
This opportunity is open to all adults, with a special invitation extended to veterans, serving personnel, and military families. No previous dance experience is required—just an interest in movement, reflection, and being part of something meaningful.
Rehearsals will take place on Sunday 19 October and Sunday 26 October from 10:30am – 1:00pm at the Woodhorn Museum in Ashington.
The community performance will take place on Saturday 1 November 2025 at 12:00pm, either indoors or outdoors at Woodhorn Museum, depending on the weather.
Participation is free, thanks to funding from a National Lottery Project Grant (administered by Arts Council England) and support from Woodhorn Museum. Spaces are limited, and all participants must register by 12 October 2025.
