The Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition is thrilled to name Mayara Magri as its 2025 Commissioned Choreographer. Magri, a Brazilian Principal of The Royal Ballet, will craft two original variations, set to music by André Mehmari, premiering at the competition’s final on Sunday, 19 October 2025, at the Auditorio Ibirapuera.
One variation will be performed in pointe shoes and the other in flat shoes, allowing candidates to choose their preferred style. Embracing The Fonteyn’s dedication to inclusivity and self-expression, candidates may also present their Dancers Own Variation in either pointe or flat shoes, independent of the Classical Repertoire Variation. Candidates will receive coaching from Alexander Campbell throughout the competition week to hone their performances.
Magri’s journey began at Rio de Janeiro’s Petite Danse School at age eight, followed by training at The Royal Ballet School. Graduating into The Royal Ballet in 2012, she rose from First Artist in 2015 to Soloist in 2016, First Soloist in 2018, and Principal in 2021. Her choreographic works include “Sono Con Te” and “(Re)Current” with Matthew Ball.
Talking to her about her new role Mayara Magri says: “As a Brazilian, achieving my dream of becoming a ballerina through dance competitions taught me life values that continue to shape my professional journey today. The unforgettable memories from those experiences have stayed with me, and it feels so meaningful to now pass that inspiration on to the next generation of dancers. I’m proud to support the Royal Academy of Dance in this milestone and to celebrate the power of dance in transforming lives.”
The Fonteyn eagerly awaits Magri’s creations and the candidates’ unique showcases of skill and individuality. Visit https://www.thefonteyn.org/ for more details.
